A Tale of True Love

How she ended up at Berta’s door is uncertain. But she was abandoned, scared, malnourished and wet. Around the same time in 2014, a young volunteer named Dan came to VerdiAzul, Playa Junquillal’s turtle rescue organization, and their paths crossed for a very special reason, in a very special way.

Dan and Dora

It was clear to everyone who witnessed Dan and Dora together that they were meant for each other. You could see the look of pure love on Dora’s face when Dan was with her. During his time at VerdiAzul, they became best friends and Dan began researching how to take her home to the U.S. with him. Unfortunately, it was a complicated and expensive process and it didn’t happen that year. But the story doesn’t end here.

A few years later, Dan returned to VerdiAzul to volunteer for the turtle rescue again, and of course to visit his pal Dora who was still being fostered at Berta’s. Dan had kept in touch with Berta and the year before Dan’s mother adopted Viví, a little dog who was found on the street with a skin parasite and tick fever that Berta nursed back to health.

Now, it was Dan’s turn to adopt Dora! But why adopt just one, when you can adopt two? Dan decided to take Dora’s foster sister Camila back home with them, too! He set to work getting all their travel paperwork ready to fly to the United States where they would reunite with their old friend Viví.

On Dan’s birthday in April of 2018, he flew with Dora and Camila to the U.S. We can’t think of a better way to spend your birthday than adopting two dogs! They now live in a loving home in Massachusetts, and will never have to worry about going hungry again. We can’t thank Dan and his mom Diane enough for adopting Dora, Camila and Viví, changing their lives and continuing to support our efforts from afar.

If Dan’s story inspired you, consider donating to Hope 4 A Street Dog! Berta always has 5-10 dogs that she is fostering at a time and needs help with food and medicine until they find their forever homes. Contact us if you are interested in adopting and we will introduce you to the dogs we have that are looking for their soulmates!
